East Java Mud Volcano

This began last May. An oil company was drilling nearby, exploring the area for possible oil, when a crack appeared some ways away and mud started flowing out of it. Apparently it’s boiling hot and smells horrible, and it hasn’t stopped since. It’s covered whole villages and forced thousands of people out of their homes.

In the news today it says they’ve decided to drop hundreds of concrete balls on chains into the mouth of the volcano, slowly, only a few a day, in the hopes of slowing the momentum of the mud. This is the latest idea. Before this there was talk of building a permanent flow right out to the Java Sea, or filling the underground bubble of mud with concrete.
